Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy to perform work. The most common use of sunlight today is converting into electricity through photovoltaic systems. Solar energy is a clean renewable energy source but limited in availability.

Yes, MEP does allow solar panels to be connected to our distribution system through properly installed inverters/controllers and disconnect switches. Self-installs are not allowed. All systems must be installed by qualified personnel in accordance with NEC 690.4(C).

MEP is supportive of any action or product that is environmentally friendly and will save our members on their electric bill. We support all energy efficiency measures and solar installations. We encourage our members to research products and remember results may vary based on individual usage.

There are 2 types of solar systems.

• An off-grid system that is totally isolated from the electric grid and incapable of connecting to it. These systems generally require batteries to store energy to be used when there is no sunlight available.
• An on-grid/interconnected system connects to the electric grid but still disconnects in the event of loss of power. The member may choose to or not to sell back excess energy.

MEP has entered into an “all requirements” contract with our generation and transmission provider, Cooperative Energy. Cooperative Energy will buy any energy the member supplies back to the electric grid at $0.045/kWh.

The standard size for residential rooftop solar is less than 10kW. Some larger homes have just over 10kW.

As of January 1, 2022 there are just over 60 rooftop solar installations on MEP’s system.

MEP recommends our member research and find the best qualified installer for them individually. Solar contractors can help advise on the most economic and individually tailored size system for your home/business.

• Member is required to complete an application detailing the system specifications and their installer’s information.
• Member is required to execute a 3-party DG Agreement with MEP and its power supplier, Cooperative Energy, before installation. Member must comply with all requirements of national codes and standards including but not limited to: IEEE 1547 (Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems), UL 1741 (Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use with Distributed Energy Resources), and the NEC (National Electric Code).

If a member is renting a home with solar installed, they are required to execute a 3-party DG Agreement just as stated above.

The average cost of solar is about $3/Watt. The average size for residential rooftop solar is 5-10kW which is 5,000-10,000 Watts. The total cost for a 5kW system would be $3/Watt x 5,000 Watts = $15,000. The total cost for a 10kW system would be $3/Watt x 10,000 Watts = $30,000. There are state and federal tax credits that fluctuate yearly that could reduce that cost. Please check for the current tax credits that would apply.

• Engineering fee:

      Up to 15kW:  $100.00
      All others:  Based on extent of Engineering Study requirements

• Monthly Customer Charge: $4.50/month
